Talking About Race

My heart goes out to our communities of color across the Nation as the recent violence against African Americans in our country has continued. The riots around the country and in our city highlight the anger and sadness that so many are feeling about these injustices that continue to happen. Now more than ever it is crucial that we have conversations with our children about race, inequality, power, and the importance of having and using our voice. The National Museum of African American History and Culture has put together a beautiful tool for teachers, parents, and caregivers to learn more about how to unpack their own bias as well as how to begin conversations with young people about race and prejudice. I encourage you to dive in and begin to talk with your child about what matters in our world. https://nmaahc.si.edu/learn/talking-about-race

I also found this resource from Teaching Tolerance called, "Beyond the Golden Rule: A

Parent's Guide to Preventing and Responding to Prejudice" to be particularly well done. https://www.tolerance.org/sites/default/files/general/beyond_golden_rule.pdf

If you want support in this journey of how to talk to your kids about tough topics, know that you are not alone in this brave task! We are in it together and I am here for you if you need ideas or want to troubleshoot together!
